My Wall
NYU Langone Medical Center recently built the Kimmel Pavilion, one of the most digitally integrated and sophisticated inpatient facilities in the country, designed to maximize the level of care for each patient. Each patient room features MyWall, a 75-inch electronic display screen with a touch screen tablet at the bedside, giving patients easy access to view educational materials related to care, watch TV and movies, communicate with loved ones through the phone, order meals, and adjust room temperature, lighting, and window shades. I was asked to help design the tablet. We did extensive research interviewing, observing and user testing with doctors, nurses and patients.

Softphone Wireframing
We started out building softphone prototypes. Besides controlling Help overlay on softphone wireframe, the My Wall display, phone functionality was going to be a primary function of the tablet. It would have the ability to receive Incoming Calls and Send Outgoing Calls. From a user experience perspective, we saw the need to have extra large buttons to accommodate a broad range of patients of different age groups, ailments and experience
levels using digital devices. The screens to the right are showing the application utilizing Help Screen Overlays to help the patient get familiar with some of the functions. For the softphone in particular I worked on the UX Wireframing and Apartment One helped out with the high fidelity prototyping.
Accessible Entertainment
My Entertainment allows patients access to in-room
entertainment displayed on the My Wall 75 inch screen.
You can use the internet, read books, watch movies and
TV shows, and listen to music and podcasts through
some of the major subscription based services. Extra
large buttons and text were used in case patients had
vision impairments and/or less than average dexterity.
In-Room Comfort
Patients also get a range of relaxation options. They are able to adjust window shades, lighting, and room temperature. You can turn off the lights when you want to sleep or close the shades during the day without having to get out of bed or request
assistance. There is a Nurse icon always docked at
the very bottom throughout the app in case the
patient needs assistance.
Interactive Food Menu
The MyWall tablet provides access to full menus based on patientsʼ dietary preferences and corresponding nutritional information, enabling them to order meals right from their bed. Meals that donʼt correspond with the patientʼs prescribed diet are filtered out. A simple layout was implemented which allows the pateint to put together a meal by appetizers, entrees, desserts and beverages. Along with the Nutrition Facts, the design includes the ingredients within each of the options to keep the patient informed.
